Sofa disposal in Brighton: council collection, tip rules and alternatives

Every practical way to dispose of a sofa or armchair in Brighton, including why upholstered seating needs special handling and what the council and the tip charge.

An old sofa waiting to be collected outside a home in Brighton

Quick answer

A sofa in good condition with its fire label can often be donated or sold. A worn one goes to a council bulky collection or the tip, where upholstered seating is handled separately. If it is upstairs or will not fit in the car in Brighton, a private collection is easier.

Your options at a glanceSection titled Your%20options%20at%20a%20glance

If your sofa or armchair is in good condition and still has its fire-safety label, donating or selling it is the best first step. Otherwise you can book a Brighton & Hove City Council bulky waste collection, check the rules at the city's recycling sites, or arrange a private collection. Council prices and rules change, so recheck the official pages before you book.

Why sofas need special handlingSection titled Why%20sofas%20need%20special%20handling

Many sofas and armchairs contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs), usually from flame retardants. Under the GOV.UK guidance on managing waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPs, this waste must be kept separate from other waste, must not go to landfill, and must be incinerated at a site authorised to accept it. The guidance covers sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, recliners, dining chairs, futons and bean bags, but not mattresses.

That extra handling is why a sofa costs more to dispose of than most furniture. Brighton & Hove City Council says that from 1 April 2026 sofas and armchairs are collected and treated separately from other bulky waste, with their own charges.

Book a Brighton Council bulky waste collectionSection titled Book%20a%20Brighton%20Council%20bulky%20waste%20collection

Brighton & Hove City Council charges £45 for a sofa or sofa bed and £35 for an armchair. Other bulky items are priced separately, from £25 for one item. You book by phoning the Bulky Waste Team on 01273 292 929 (9:30am to 1:30pm, Monday to Friday), describe each item and pay over the phone. The council says slots are currently 3 to 4 weeks ahead. See the council's bulky collection page for the full list.

Leave items on your driveway or in your front or back garden, or just inside your front door if you have no outside space. Never leave them on the road or pavement, as that counts as fly-tipping. If what is there does not match your description, the crew may not collect it and will give you an updated quote.

Taking a sofa to the tipSection titled Taking%20a%20sofa%20to%20the%20tip

Brighton & Hove has two household waste recycling sites: Hove (Modbury Way, off Old Shoreham Road, BN3 7AE) and Brighton (Whitehawk, off Wilson Avenue, BN2 5PA). We could not find an official page confirming whether they accept sofas or how upholstered seating is handled, so phone the council before loading the car.

The access rules say cars need photo ID plus proof of a Brighton & Hove address dated within the last three months. Vans need proof of address and two forms of ID. Luton and box-body vans, flatbeds, tippers and trailers over 1.2m are not allowed, and trade waste is not accepted.

Under GOV.UK guidance on reusing upholstered domestic seating, a sofa can be donated for reuse only if it needs no more than minor repair and meets the reuse conditions, including carrying the appropriate fire safety labels. The Reuse Network explains that each upholstered item needs its own permanent label, usually found under a cushion, and charities cannot take it without one.

We have not confirmed collection terms for any particular Brighton charity, so contact local furniture charities and charity shops directly to ask about collection areas and condition rules. You can also try selling a clean sofa with its label through a local online marketplace.

When a private collection makes senseSection titled When%20a%20private%20collection%20makes%20sense

A paid collection is worth it if the sofa is upstairs, will not fit through the door without dismantling, nobody can lift it, there is other furniture to go, or the council's next slot is too far away. Brighton Rubbish Removal carries it out and disposes of it through the correct licensed route.

Common questionsSection titled Common%20questions

Will the council take a sofa in Brighton?Section titled Will%20the%20council%20take%20a%20sofa%20in%20Brighton%3F

Yes. Brighton & Hove City Council collects sofas and sofa beds for £45 and armchairs for £35, by phone booking. Recheck the page before booking, as prices change.

Can a charity collect my sofa?Section titled Can%20a%20charity%20collect%20my%20sofa%3F

Possibly, if it is in good condition and has its permanent fire safety label. The Reuse Network says charities cannot take upholstered items without one. Contact the charity to check its collection area and conditions.

Can I cut a sofa up and put it in the bin?Section titled Can%20I%20cut%20a%20sofa%20up%20and%20put%20it%20in%20the%20bin%3F

No, we would not recommend it. The GOV.UK guidance says waste upholstered seating containing POPs must be kept separate from other waste and incinerated, and that mixed waste containing it must be managed as POPs waste. Use a council bulky collection or a licensed carrier instead.
