Brighton bulky item collection: council service or private team?

Compare the local council bulky waste service with private clearance in Brighton, including what the council charges, how collection works and when a private team is the better fit.

Bulky household items ready for collection outside a home in Brighton

Quick answer

If you only have a few eligible items and can leave them outside for collection, the council route may be enough. For indoor removals, mixed loads, urgent jobs or awkward access in Brighton, private clearance is usually the more practical option.

What Brighton & Hove City Council currently chargesSection titled What%20Brighton%20%26%20Hove%20City%20Council%20currently%20charges

Brighton & Hove City Council collects large household items — furniture, mattresses, appliances and similar bulky waste — through a paid, phone-booked service. Prices are charged per item on a sliding scale: £25 for a single item, rising to £120 for six items. Sofas, sofa beds and armchairs are now collected and charged separately (£45 for a sofa or sofa bed, £35 for an armchair), and white goods such as fridges and washing machines cost £47 each.

There's no published maximum on how many items you can book in, but the standard price list only runs up to six — for a larger load, you'll need to describe what you have when you call so the council can quote for it. Booking is by phone only, on 01273 292 929, Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 1:30pm, and during busy periods slots have been running three to four weeks ahead.

The rules that matter before you bookSection titled The%20rules%20that%20matter%20before%20you%20book

Price is only part of the decision — whether the council's placement and access rules actually fit your property usually matters more. The sections below cover what the council requires.

Where items must be leftSection titled Where%20items%20must%20be%20left

Items need to be ready and easily accessible when the crew arrives — on a driveway, in a front or back garden, or just inside the front door if there's no outside space. The council is clear that items should never be left out on the road or pavement outside your home.

This is an outside-only service: crews collect from the driveway, garden or just inside the front door, and won't go further into the property to bring items down from upstairs rooms or a loft. It's a household collection, so the council can't take commercial or business waste through this route, and it states it can't accept responsibility for any damage caused during collection.

Changes, refunds and assisted collectionsSection titled Changes%2C%20refunds%20and%20assisted%20collections

Bulky collections are booked and paid for by phone, so cancellation and refund terms are confirmed with the call handler at the time of booking rather than published as a fixed policy online — it's worth asking directly if your plans might change. The council does run an assisted collections service for residents who can't move their own bins, but this covers regular rubbish, recycling, garden waste and food waste collections rather than bulky items. If you can't move large items yourself, phone 01273 29 07 98 to discuss options with the bulky waste team directly.

When the council service is usually enoughSection titled When%20the%20council%20service%20is%20usually%20enough

The council route tends to work well when your situation matches how the service is designed to run:

  • A handful of eligible household items, rather than a full house clearance
  • Items are already outside, or you can easily move them to the driveway or garden yourself
  • You can wait three to four weeks for a booking slot
  • Nothing is too heavy or awkward for one or two people to carry outside
  • You don't need anything brought down from upstairs, a loft or a hard-to-reach corner
  • You're happy to pay the separate charge for any sofas, armchairs or white goods

When private clearance is the better optionSection titled When%20private%20clearance%20is%20the%20better%20option

Private clearance usually makes more sense when the council's rules don't quite fit your situation:

  • Items are still upstairs, in a loft, shed or garage, and need carrying out first
  • You have a mixed load of furniture, bagged waste and appliances to clear in one go
  • You need everything gone this week, not in three to four weeks
  • Access is tight — narrow stairs, no nearby parking, or a block with restricted entry
  • Your load is bigger than the council's standard item-by-item pricing covers
  • You're clearing a property to a deadline — probate, end of tenancy or a sale completion date

Common questionsSection titled Common%20questions

Is Brighton & Hove City Council's bulky collection cheaper than private clearance?Section titled Is%20Brighton%20%26%20Hove%20City%20Council%27s%20bulky%20collection%20cheaper%20than%20private%20clearance%3F

For a single, easy-to-reach item, the council's £25 starting price is hard to beat. But costs rise quickly on the sliding scale — up to £120 for six items, plus separate charges for sofas, armchairs and white goods — so a full load can add up, on top of a three-to-four-week wait for a slot. Private clearance is priced by load and labour, so it's often more competitive once you're clearing several rooms or a mixed load in one visit.

Will the council collect items from inside my house?Section titled Will%20the%20council%20collect%20items%20from%20inside%20my%20house%3F

No. The council's service collects from outside the property — a driveway, garden, or just inside the front door if there's no outside space. It won't send a crew upstairs, into a loft, or further into the property, so anything that needs carrying out first has to be moved by you, or someone else, before collection day.

What happens if I have more than six items or a mixed load?Section titled What%20happens%20if%20I%20have%20more%20than%20six%20items%20or%20a%20mixed%20load%3F

The council's published pricing runs up to six items on a sliding scale, and there's no fixed process for larger or mixed loads beyond describing them when you call to book. For anything beyond a few individual items — or a genuine mixed clearance — private clearance is usually simpler, since it's priced for the whole load rather than item by item.
